Wireless Internet at Pinckney Hall, Hidden Cypress,  Riverbend Lodge
and the Computer Room

With much thanks to "Doc" at Davidson Cable, Jody Dorell,  Phillip Shuppel, and Richard de Asla Sun City now has four Wi-Fi hotspots. Residents can take properly-equipped laptop/notebook computers to Pinckney Hall, Hidden Cypress,  Riverbend Lodge and the computer room and experience high-speed broadband Internet.   All that is required is a wireless 802.11b or 802.11g capable PCMCIA card or USB wireless adapter. To get online, let your wireless software scan for a site survey then connect to NETGEAR at Pinckney Hall or to Linksys at Hidden Cypress. The SSID for Riverbend  and the computer room will be published here soon. The printers and scanners on the network in the computer room cannot be accessed while using your laptop wireless connection.

System Security:

Security is not enabled thus encryption is not currently available. This means passwords, account numbers, and other sensitive data may be locally intercepted. It is recommended that users not access bank accounts, etc., via this service.

Special notes:

Typical indoor range is 100-150 feet.

Coverage and signal quality are excellent within the main hall and lobby vicinity. Signal strength is generally good in the remainder of the building.

It is possible to receive service outside of Pinckney Hall and Hidden Cypress and the computer room up to about 100 feet from the front door and other exterior locales. Note that you may detect more than one wireless network. Again, the correct SSID is NETGEAR for Pinckney Hall and Linksys at Hidden Cypress.

Attention 802.11g users: For compatibility, if any 802.11b device is online, all transmissions may default to 802.11b speed.
