Challenge

The Computer Club has been challenged by the Veterans and the Woodworkers clubs, as to who can best decorate a Holiday tree. Come for the tree decorating on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 2pm The Computer Club is assigned to one of the two trees on the dance floor. The lights and decorations are ready to go - all we have to do is decorate.

The end of an era! This is the last copy of the newsletter to be printed and delivered to your lower mail box. From now on you will be notified by e-mail that the current newsletter is available on our web site of www.suncitycc.org.

The first newsletter, Volume one, Issue one, was February 1997. It was called "Sun City Computer Club." A contest was held and the newsletter was renamed "KeyStrokes" in September 1998. The newsletter was published using black ink on white paper except: green paper in October & December 1998, and blue paper in November 1998 and February 1999. I don't know why; you might want to ask the then president.

Speaking of presidents, do you know the past presidents of our Club?

Roy Richard 1996

Juli Yale 1997-1998

Ed (Grumpy) Gutwald 1999

Jim Murnane 2000-2002

Thank You!

A lot of "Thank Yous" go to these people for the early days of getting the Club started and teaching and getting the Education Department up and running. In the early days the presidents wore many hats and whatever had to be done their spouses were volunteered to help. So when you see a president you see a family that got things done.

Don't forget the faithful Editors of the KeyStrokes - those who started it and kept it going!

As this era comes to an end, I would like to thank Steve Koehl for creating and maintaining our Web site. A Computer Club is not a Computer Club without a Web site. We would not be able to go forward without his help

This is my column but this is not my Computer Club. Do you know how many people it takes to run this Computer Club? Letls count together.

Notes from the Education Chair

Our capable volunteer instructors are taking a well-deserved break during the Holidays. Computer classes will begin again the week of Jan. 19. Along with many of our regular offerings we will have a few new classes including Beyond the Basics of E-mail and an Introduction to Photoshop Elements. We will notify you by e-mail when the class schedules are posted on www.suncitycc.org and on the Computer Room bulletin board.

Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, and there are a limited number of registrations available in each class. First registration for January and February classes will be Monday January 5 from 1 - 3 pm in the Computer Room. Second registration will be Monday, Jan. 12 from 6:15 - 7:45pm in Pinckney Hall prior to the January monthly meeting. After that, all remaining classes will be available through the Class Sales Black Box in the Computer Room. For a detailed description of most classes along with their skill level assumptions, check the Class Description book in the Computer Room during any open time.

If you’ve finished the OpenCourseware at http://ocw.mit.edu mentioned last month (Yeah, right!), you might want to give http://learningcenter.

netscape.com a look. Some of their online courses are for Free, others for a modest Fee. Robin is currently enrolled in Focus on Taking Great Digital Pictures while Diane just finished Mastering Buying and Selling on eBay.

If you have comments, questions or suggestions for the Education Chair, please contact Robin Seaver (searobin@islc.net) or Diane Hutchings (dianeh@alum.bu.edu).

Please be sure to let Membership know if your e-mail changes at any time during the year.

All 2003 memberships will expire on Dec. 31 and may be renewed using this link.

Don't forget to wear your nametag to meetings and classes - especially to the Holiday Party in December.

Any questions regarding Membership, e-mail Diane Frazier-Ciravolo at disfc@aol.com or call 3841.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NOVEMBER MEETING

From 6:30 - 6:55pm, a new session called "Got a Question?" was held.  A panel answered computer-related questions.  Priority was given to questions submitted by e-mail prior to the meeting.  Questions are to be sent to pshuppelsccc@davtv.com. Phillip Shuppel, President, called the meeting of Nov. 10, to order at 7:00pm.

Tips and Tricks - Lynn Conley instructed the group on how to get a second free business e-mail address to use at times that you do not want to give out your personal e-mail address.  She used Yahoo as an example.

President's Report - The VHS tape "What to Do until the Doctor Comes" is available in the Computer Room for checkout.  It is a good idea to view this tape before you have a problem.  It lasts about ¾ of an hour and is a tape of a program that Bob Rasmussen gave last spring.

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as published in the November KeyStrokes.  On Dec. 2, there will be a challenge among the Woodworkers, Veteran's, and Computer Clubs to see who can decorate the best holiday tree.  More information will be e-mailed to the membership.

The Holiday party will be Dec. 8 with John Longo as chairperson.  There will be a demonstration that night of the new web site.

The KeyStrokes newsletter will no longer be delivered to your mailbox starting January 2004.  You will be getting an e-mail letting you know when the newsletter is available on line.  This will eliminate the need to have volunteers deliver the newsletter to homes.

Technical Committee - Bob Rasmussen - After a power outage in the Computer Room, it was discovered that some of the UPSs were not plugged in correctly.  This has been corrected.  The Technical meeting will be this Wednesday at 7 p.m. Bob will lead a class on Saturday in which they will remove the hard drive from a computer, put in a clean one, and start from scratch.

Treasurer's Report - Ron Garner

September 2003

        Balance Forward............... $11,435.31

        October Income.................. $1,836.77

        October Expenses.................. $879.49

Net Operating Balance as

        of October 31, 2003......... $12,392.59

Education Committee - Robin Seaver - Registration for classes using the "black box" in the Computer Room has been going well.  There are several registrations left for classes in November.  To register via the black box, go to the Computer Room when there is an "open" session and follow the instructions on the box.  Payment must be by checks only; no cash.  There will be no classes in December.  Classes will start again on Jan. 19.  Beginning registration for January and February classes will be on Jan. 5 in the Computer Room from 1-3 p.m. and again on Jan. 12 at the Club meeting.  After that, any class that is left will be sold from the black box during "open" sessions in the Computer Room.  Please try not to disturb classes.  Look at the new web site in late December for the list of the classes.

Membership Committee - Diane Frazier-Ciravolo - Diane welcomed new members.  Since the 31st of October, there have been 66 new registrations.  Our membership is now 710.  There were 175 attending the meeting including 10 guests.  If you have recently joined or renewed your membership, your new nametags will be in the "green box" in the Computer Room or may be picked up after this meeting.  Please wear your nametags to meetings and in the Computer Room.

Monitor Committee - Richard LaFever - Since the last monitor training class, new monitors have been added and some have dropped out.  There are currently 60 monitors.  In the future, monitors will be able to sign up for monitor duty on their home computer.  This is only for the "open" sessions.  Monitors for classes will continue to sign up as usual.

Program Committee - George Weyhrich - Dec. 8 will be the annual holiday party.  John Longo and his committee are planning this event.  Please leave your reservations for the party in John's lower mailbox or in the Computer Room.  There is still time to volunteer to help with the party by calling John.

In January, we will have a representative from the Beaufort County Sheriff's office.  February will feature digital cameras.

The program this evening featured Skip Purdy from Microsoft with new updates to MS Office 2003.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted

Pat Beaty, Secretary

May your holidays be blessed with good family time, good food and good health.
