COMPUTER CLUB COMMENTS

ByPhillip Shuppel

President

Here are a few strong points that you should take advantage of in your Computer Club:

Ø      We offer classes that, while not free, are a fraction of the cost of similar classes taught elsewhere.  These classes provide hands-on learning using our computer with DSL internet access in a classroom environment.

Ø      George Weyhrich’s monthly e-mail reminder of meetings keeps us informed of the meeting date and the program being presented.  This service will be expanded to let you know when the newsletter is available on-line at our website.  We will add more information to our website and notify you of the additions.  If we have your current e-mail address, you have been receiving notices.  If not, or you change your e-mail address, please send an e-mail to weyhrich@hargray.com from your new address that plainly says “This is my new e-mail address” and he will correct it so you will receive or continue to receive the notices.

You can also e-mail George with suggestions for programs that you would like the club to present.  George always welcomes ideas for programs from our members.

Ø      However, the BEST THING about being a SCHHCC member is that you’ll be a part of the best bunch of folks you’ll ever meet!  As a member, you are always welcome at our activities, the classroom, general meetings, and any Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings.  No one can know all there is to know about computers, but your membership helps you to know where you can go for answers.

That’s all I’ve got to say…for now.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE APRIL MEETING

Jim Murnane called the meeting of April 14 to order at 7:00 p.m.  Members and guests were welcomed to the meeting.

President’s Report – Jim Murnane

Correction to KeyStrokes Minutes

A correction was made to the minutes of the last meeting.  It was stated in the April KeyStrokes that the Board had passed the 2003 operating Budget of $18,000.  The correct amount is $18,500.  A motion to approve the corrected Budget amount was made, seconded, and approved.

Support Our Troops

Jim Murnane received a call from Roger Ramm, Senior Vice Commander of the Sun City Veterans club.  He asked for support from our Club, specifically to assist the families of our local deployed troops.  Our Computer Club Board approved a donation of $400.  A thank you letter was received from Commander Ralph James.  This money will be combined with donations of other Sun City clubs and will be presented to Fort Stewart, Parris Island, and the Beaufort Air Station.

Financial Audit

Each year our club is required to have our finances audited.  Bev Witzel audited the books for the year January 1, 2002 through December 31, 2002.  She found that the records had been properly prepared and accurately reflect the financial position of the SCHH Computer Club.

Survey “Get Connected”

The results of our recent survey were successful.  We receive responses from 56 members with some very positive information for our club and our committees.  The results were handed over to the various committee chairs to make the appropriate contacts.  We like to know your thoughts and ideas and this was a very good way of finding out.  We appreciate your response to this survey.

Electronic Newsletter

This month Steve Koehl, in association with our newsletter editor, Sandy Tucker, put the KeyStrokes on our web site www.suncitycc.org.  We are moving forward in getting the newsletter to you via computer, either by a web page or e-mail and eliminating the hard copy as much as possible.  During the next month or two, we will still deliver hard copies.  Delivering hard copies is a major printing expense (approximately $3000 a year) and involves a very labor-intensive distribution system of about 50 members.  We may be trying different things, but we will ultimately use electronic mail for the newsletter.

Elections of New Board Members

Last month, new Board members were nominated.  Since there were no additional nominations from the floor last month, the nominations were closed.  Juli Yale, our Nominating Committee Chair, presented the slate of officers:

President – Phillip Shuppel

Vice-President - Sharon Cann

Secretary – Pat Beaty

Treasurer – Ron Garner

A motion was made to accept the slate as presented.  It was seconded and approved.

Juli presented outgoing Board President Jim Murnane, who had been President for three years, with an engraved wall clock in appreciation and recognition of excellence in leadership.  Jim thanked Juli and the membership.

Membership – Lynn Conley

Since March 14, there have been 15 members added.  The total membership numbers 557.

Treasurer - Sharon Cann

Balance forward

  as of February 28, 2003              $20,277.73

March Income                                    +838.97

March Expenses                                 -729.13

Net Operating Balance

  as of March 31, 2003                  $20,387.57

Technical – Bob Rasmussen

The technical committee meeting is held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 pm.

All members are welcome to attend this meeting.

Program – George Weyhrich

George explained that the meeting was being videotaped for future presentation on Channel 50.

He asked that members notify him of changes in their e-mail addresses so he can keep his list current as he often sends out program notices before the meetings.

The program in May will feature Dan Rogers, a representative from Pinnacle Systems, who will demonstrate video and editing and techniques.  June is to be announced.  September will be Adobe, October is to be announced, and November will be Microsoft.

George introduced the program “What to Do Until the Doctor Comes” featuring Bob Rasmussen, Robin Seaver, and Steve Koehl.  They presented their versions of how to solve basic computer problems.  A handout was given to accompany the program.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Pat Beaty, Secretary

Tips and Tricks

Create a new e-mail message using Word:

1.      On the File menu, click New.

2.      In the New Document task pane, under New, click Blank E-mail Message.

3.      Enter recipient names in the appropriate boxes.

4.      In the Subject box, type the subject of the message.

5.      In the document, type the message

6.      Click Send.

This is an excellent way to cut and paste rather than forwarding all those annoying > marks.  Copy the e-mail message and paste into a new Word document.  You may then edit the message and send it directly from your Word document.

Unfortunately, most animated e-mails will not copy to a new document.

Tip

Click New E-Mail Message on the Standard Toolbar to quickly send an existing document as an e-mail message.
